Incident with seriously injured Lufkin woman found under Hwy 94 bridge ruled accident

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Investigators with the Angelina County Sheriff's Office have closed the case on the seriously injured woman found under the Neches River bridge on Highway 94 West back in July.

Originally, the ACSO was treating the woman's injury as a 'suspicious incident." However, Captain Alton Lenderman of the Angelina County Sheriff's Office said the woman's fall from the Neches River bridge has been ruled an accident.

At the time, Lt. Pete Maskunas said the sheriff's office was treating the incident as a criminal case, just to be on the safe side.

The woman suffered injuries to her legs, hips, elbows, ribs, spleen, eye socket, and cheek, Maskunas said. If the woman fell off the bridge, it is about a 22-foot drop to where she was found.

The woman told authorities that the last thing she remembers before waking up under the bridge on Highway 94 is walking out of Jimmy's Bar in Trinity County after midnight Thursday. One witness saw her walk out of the bar and continue walking on Highway 94. Somehow, the injured woman used her cell phone to call her friends and direct them to her location, Maskunas said.

"If in fact, she fell off the bridge, she's extremely lucky to be alive," Maskunas said in a previous East Texas News story.
