Arizona executes oldest inmate Schad for '78 killing

Edward Schad Edward Schad
PHOENIX (AP) -

Arizona has executed the oldest person on its death row for killing a man in 1978.

Seventy-one-year-old Edward Harold Schad Jr. was given a lethal dose of the pentobarbital and was pronounced dead at 10:12 a.m. Wednesday at the state prison in Florence.

Schad's last words were, "Well, after 34 years I'm free to fly away home. Thank you, Warden. Those are my last words."

His last meal, served to him Tuesday night, consisted of a meatball sandwich, French fries, corn on-the-cob, cranberry sauce, apple pie and a vanilla shake.

Schad was convicted twice of killing 74-year-old Lorimer "Leroy" Grove of Bisbee, in southeastern Arizona.

Grove was last seen leaving Bisbee pulling a trailer with his new Cadillac on the way to visit his sister in Washington state. He was found dead with a rope knotted around his neck on Aug. 9, 1978, south of Prescott.

A month later, Schad was stopped for speeding in New York state. Schad was driving Groves' Cadillac, and many of Groves' personal belongings were in the car.

Court documents also indicate that Schad had been using Groves' credit card for about one month.

Schad's execution was Arizona's 35th since 1992. His death leaves 121 people on the death row in the state, including two women.

The U.S. Supreme Court denied final appeals for Schad early Wednesday morning.
