LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - History was made at the Boys and Girls Club of Deep East Texas in Lufkin on Friday as nearly 100 swimmers from all over East Texas gathered to compete in Lufkin's first USA swim meet.
Ambush swim has been working on becoming a USA swim team host for a year and a half and they finally got their chance.
"We had to get approval from USA swimming to host a sanctioned USA meet and those guidelines are strict and there are procedures and policies to host a sanction meet and this is the first time in history that we've ever hosted in East Texas," Tiger Christian, Ambush head coach, said.
85 swimmers gathered inside the club Friday night hoping to earn a good time and the kids favorite race? The 500 freestyle.
Ambush swimmer Weston Hyde says he is super excited to get to compete in Lufkin's very first USA meet.
"It feels pretty good because you're part of a good group and you know you're going to be helped while you're doing it and its just real fun and inspiring," Hyde said.
Erik Cozadd, the aquatics director for the Boys and Girls Club, said he thinks the team will do great this weekend.
"We're actually extremely competitive. We attend swim meets every month. Some of the best swimmers in the state actually come from our swim team whether their 10 years old, or 15 years old, or 18 years old. We definitely made a good showing wherever we go," Cozadd said.
Christian says this meet has been in the works for a year and a half and not will they have 184 athletes compete in the weekend race in total, but teams from all over East Texas and even Shreveport will travel to Lufkin for the meet.
"It's a team effort in USA swimming, and gulf swimming, and Louisiana swimming. There are so many things that have been synchronized and put together to get to this point and you know it's really good for the kids," Christian said.
And the kids say they're pretty excited.
Ambush will have another meet Saturday morning and Sunday morning.
