NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested a 59-year-old man for aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury Tuesday morning after he allegedly beat his wife so severely the night before that she had internal injuries and broken bones.

David Buchanan, 59, of Nacogdoches, is still being held in the Nacogdoches County Jail on a second-degree felony charge of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. No bail has been set at this time.

"The victim had been severely beaten, had internal injuries and several broken bones," a press release stated. "The victim is currently being treated in ICU as a result of those injuries."

Nacogdoches County Sheriff Jason Bridges said the details of why the alleged assault took place are still sketchy. However, he said he believes that alcohol and mental health issues play have played roles in Buchanan's alleged assault of his wife.

The victim was able to escape the house late Monday night by crawling out a window and then calling a family member, who transported her to the hospital, according to the press release.

NCSO deputies responded to the Nacogdoches County Memorial Hospital in reference to an assault victim. While they were there, they were able to identify Buchanan as the suspect.

When NCSO deputies went to Buchanan's residence in the 8000 block of State Highway 7 East at approximately 1 a.m. Tuesday morning, they could not locate the suspect. Authorities obtained an arrest warrant for Buchanan around 8:30 a.m.

The Nacogdoches Sheriff's deputies went back to the residence a second time about an hour and a half later and found Buchanan sleeping inside the residence. He was taken into custody without any further incident and taken to the Nacogdoches County Jail.
