LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Lufkin Police officers arrested a 25-year-old woman for driving while intoxicated with her 2-year-old child in the car Wednesday night after she allegedly backed into the side of a building in the 1900 block of Timberland Drive.

Whitney Lashay Menefee, of Lufkin, is still being held in the Angelina County Jail on a state-jail felony DWI with a child under the age of 15 in the car and two misdemeanor capias warrants - improper turn and not having a child between the ages of 4 and 14 secured by a seat belt.

According to the police report, the incident occurred at the Polk's Pick It Up convenience store located in the 1900 block of North Timberland Drive Wednesday night at approximately 9:33 p.m. Detective J.B Smith, a spokesman for the Lufkin Police Department said a citizen yelled at an LPD officer and pointed out a white Nissan Altima that had backed into the side of the building and was about to leave the scene.

The LPD officer stopped the vehicle, and the driver was identified as Menefee. Smith said Menefee was unsteady on her feet, had very slurred speech, and was confused about what time of the day it was.

"The officer did not detect the odor of an alcoholic beverage on our about Ms. Menefee's person and believed drugs or medication to be the cause of her intoxication," Smith said.

Menefee's 2-year-old child was found in the rear passenger seat of the car. A family member took custody of the child.

After she was arrested at the scene, Menefee was transported to the Angelina County Jail.
