Lufkin charter school counselor resigns after inappropriate comment accusation

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A counselor at Pineywoods Community Academy in Lufkin has resigned after being placed on paid leave following an accusation that he made an inappropriate remark to a young student.

School Director Bruce Marchand said John Carter turned in a letter of resignation earlier this week and the school board accepted the resignation at their meeting Monday.

Carter is part of a Lufkin police investigation into allegations that he made an inappropriate remark to a student under the age of 10, which was recorded, last week. The comment is described as "suggestive, not explicit," according to police spokesman JB Smith.

"We have two very experienced counselors that will begin working with us next week," Marchand said. "Both ladies contacted me early on offering their help. They're very well known by staff and parents, and we're delighted to have them work with us."

Smith said Friday that the investigation is ongoing. Police are trying to validate the recording before deciding whether or not to take the evidence to the district attorney's office for possible prosecution.
