LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Lufkin Police officers arrested a 31-year-old Diboll man for felony aggravated assault after he allegedly got into an argument with the mother of his child over money and twisted her thumb with such force that the bone shattered.
Christopher John Straps is still being held in the Angelina County Jail on a second-degree felony charge of aggravated assault of a family member causing serious bodily injury and a number of misdemeanor capias warrants for charges like no insurance, no driver's license, no motorcycle operator's license, and failure to appear. Collectively, his bail has been set at $12,920.
According to the arrest affidavit, the incident occurred on Oct. 21. An LPD officer spoke to the mother of Straps' 5-year-old son in the lobby of the police department the next day.
The victim explained to the officer that she had been in a relationship with Straps for about seven years and that approximately three weeks ago, he told her that he no longer wanted to be with her and left her and the child with no home or money.
The woman told the LPD officer that she spent all of her money moving to another house in Diboll, so that she and her child would have a place to live. According to the affidavit, the victim called Straps and told him that she needed some money from him to help support their child. The victim said Straps told her to come to Lufkin to get the money from him.
When the woman drove to Lufkin to get the money, Straps told her that he needed a ride to the M&B Grocery, so that he could get change from a larger bill, the affidavit stated. However, when they got there, Straps allegedly changed his mind; he told her that he wasn't going to give her any money and told her to take him back home.
The affidavit stated that Straps walked back into the store to call his new girlfriend to ask for a ride. The woman followed her child's husband back into the store to continue talking to him. Once they were inside the store, the victim took Straps' phone and broke it by throwing it on the floor.
'The two walked out of the store and into the parking lot where [the victim] grabbed Christopher by the shirt," the affidavit stated. "[The victim] advised Straps that her child was going to starve if he did not give her any money to help support him."
At that point, Straps allegedly grabbed the woman's thumb and "twisted it with such force that the bone shattered."
The woman told the LPD officer that she had to go to the hospital to get her injured thumb treated. She also said that she might need surgery to repair the badly damaged bone.
When the LPD detective assigned to the case called Straps to get his side of the story, the man admitted that he broke his child's mother's thumb but claimed it was an accident.
"The evidence shows that a great amount of force was used by Christopher, which resulted in him breaking [the victim's] thumb," the affidavit stated.
The LPD officer took pictures of the cast on the woman's thumb. In addition, the woman provided a picture of her thumb before the cast was put on it.
