Friend of slain family who heard shots over phone speaks

Patty Burns Patty Burns
PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The past few days have been surreal for Patty Burns. On Saturday she lost former co-worker and good friend 66-year-old Bruce Moore.

"I'm like please pinch me, tell me it's not true. I call him still every morning on the phone, just leaving him little messages," said Burns.

The two worked together for 7 years. They were drivers at BAP Auto parts.

"When I started working there he would help me with everything, and we've been friends ever since," said Burns.

Since Moore's retirement, Burn's made it a point to call him every morning on her way to work. It was during one of those chats something went terribly wrong.

"He's like hold on Patty. So I'm like OK. Then I hear in the background ‘what's up?' I am calling Bruce, Bruce, Bruce and there is no answer. Then I hear a faint gunshot in the back ground," said Burns.

Police say Michael Guzzo entered his neighbor's yard through the back gate armed with a pump shotgun.

Investigators say he shot Bruce Moore and his son-in-law Michael Moore on the back patio. Officers found the bodies on Renee Moore and her son 17-year-old Shannon Moore inside the home.

The family's two dogs were also killed before Guzzo took his own life.

"I wasn't sure what was going on. At 2 o'clock when I was told to go on my lunch I went over there," said Burns.

It was then she learned what had happened.

"I started crying and the cops started crying when he told me. I was devastated," said Burns.

Burns said Bruce Moore had told her Guzzo wasn't fond of the family's dogs and the two had words about it. But no one could have imagined it would have played out the way it did.

"He could have just called police or said I'm having a problem, instead of doing what he did," said Burns.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
