Attend Peoria haunted house to support boy, 10, battling leukemia

A Valley family is using the scary sights and sounds of Halloween to entertain the neighborhood and, more important, help take their minds off of the real life fears they must face every day.

It took more than a month for Lara Care and her husband, Kendall Care, to turn their front yard into one of the scariest haunted houses in Peoria.

It's a lot of work for any family, but with what they are dealing with inside their home, this massive and petrifying project is even more impressive.

"I honestly think we're crazy. We probably are," Lara Care said.

Their 10-year-old son, Matthew Care was diagnosed last February with leukemia for the second time. It's more aggressive now and he must spend weeks at a time in the hospital during treatment.

"Matthew wanted to know why it was happening to him and I just told him he was special. There is a reason for why God is choosing you and we're going to fight it," Lara Care said.

Because of his condition, Matthew Care and his family must stay fairly isolated, so on Halloween and at great personal cost, they look forward to bringing the neighborhood to them, welcoming the little ghouls and goblins by the hundreds.

"That's just their nature. They are just so loving and giving. They do this to make other people feel better and I think in turn it makes them feel better," their neighbor, Lisa Serra said.

Serra wanted the Valley to know about the generosity and inspiration she sees by looking out her window every day. This week she presented them with $500 from CBS 5 News' Pay It Forward.

"I want to see you guys get a little recognition and a little bit of whatever for what you do for everybody, despite what your family has going on, so I am paying it forward to you guys," Serra said.

Matthew Care counsels other kids at the hospital on what to expect to hopefully take their fears away.

The Cares stage the haunted house free of charge, just for the joy that it brings.

Last year, just on Halloween, the Cares' haunted house had 1,000 visitors. They are going to stay open Halloween night and the following night (Friday) and their neighbors talked them into putting out a donation jar. The hours are 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

If you would like to get scared out of your wits, their address is 7011 W. Cheryl Dr., Peoria, AZ 85345
