LAX shooting delays flights from Phoenix to LA

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Some flights at Phoenix airport are taking off for Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) again after a deadly shooting stopped flights in and out of LAX for most of the morning.

A Sky Harbor International Airport spokesperson said seven flights from Phoenix to LAX were canceled, including five on Southwest, one on U.S. Airways and one on Delta.

Another seven LAX-bound flights were delayed, including three U.S. Airways flights and four United Airlines flights.

Ten flights headed for LAX were diverted to Sky Harbor, including flights on American, Delta, Southwest and U.S. Airways.

Thousands of fliers across the U.S. were delayed Friday after the shooting at an LAX at a security checkpoint closed parts of the nation's third largest airport, and caused a prolonged shutdown.

The shooting left several wounded, including the suspected gunman. A TSA agent was killed. The suspect has been taken into police custody. LAX Police Chief Patrick Gannon said a lone shooter pulled an assault rifle out of a bag and began to open fire around 9:20 a.m.

Sky Harbor said travelers are still encouraged to check their flight status with their airline before going to the airport, and the same goes for people planning to pick up friends or family flying in from LAX.
