LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Brandon Ward said the trunk-or-treat event his family attended at their church Thursday night was the best Halloween his 6-year-old daughter, Brazyl, ever had.

"She was so happy. We gave here a little bucket for her candy and it was overflowing, so she had to use a plastic bag," said Ward.

On the way home, the family had cross to Peace Way. A car was in the distance, but didn't look to be a threat.

"The issue is that the vehicle accelerated to about 60 miles an hour," said Ward.

The family of five stopped in the middle of the street to avoid the vehicle, but Brazyl was too far ahead.

"I didn't see her get hit, I heard it," said Brandon. "So when I look and see my daughter on the floor, immediately, training takes place. You know what the main priority is, there's a life that needs to be saved and it happened to be my daughter's."

Ward, a former Metro police office, immediately began administering CPR. While he resuscitated Brazyl, witnesses say the driver of the vehicle went back for a second look.

"[He] went down the street, kept going, turned around, drove right by it and didn't even stop," said witness Dustin Taylor.

Brazyl is in critical but stable condition at UMC after doctors performed surgery to remove a piece of her skull.

On Friday, friends left stuffed animals and notes at the scene of the accident to show support for the first-grader at Frank Kim Elementary.

The family will be at UMC around the clock.

"What my daughter can accomplish in this life is limitless. We have no idea where she can go or where she's going. We know she's a good kid and now she has to fight," said Ward.

And when it comes to the driver, this father expects justice.

"This is the decision that they made. This is the action they went forward with and eventually they have to pay the consequences. They have to deal with it. This is on their conscience," said Ward.

The family has set up an account if anyone would like to make a donation to assist with medical bills, here.
