TUCSON, AZ (AP/CBS5) -

Firefighters are investigating the cause of a blaze early Sunday morning that ripped through the attic of a three-story church near downtown Tucson.

The first crews were dispatched to the church in the 600 block of N. 6th Avenue around 2 a.m. Sunday after a passerby saw the fire. They found heavy smoke coming from the vents above the third floor.

More crews arrived and forced their way into the church to make sure no one was inside, said Fire Capt. Barrett Baker.

The firefighters used thermal imagining cameras to locate the fire in the attic. Multiple holes were cut in the roof to let the smoke escape as crews on the ground sprayed water into more holes that were cut into the ceiling.

More than 40 firefighters and 15 units responded to the two-alarm blaze. No injuries were reported.

Fire crews pulled down the ceiling using long poles to access the attic space and extinguish the flames by spraying water into the holes.

Due to the size of the building and type of fire, a second alarm was dispatched to the scene about 20 minutes after the initial units were alerted, Baker said.
