CORTEZ, CO (AP) -

Authorities in Colorado are investigating after a 38-year-old inmate from Arizona was found dead in a holding cell at the Montezuma County jail.

Sheriff Dennis Spruell says Harrison M. Begay, of Tonalea, AZ, was initially brought to the jail on a trespassing charge at about 1 a.m. Oct. 26 but was taken to a hospital because he was "highly intoxicated."

He was returned to the jail and placed on a medical watch.

Spruell says jail staff found Begay dead in the cell at about 3:30 a.m. on Oct. 27.

The Cortez Journal reports the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is looking into the case.
