PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Police shot and killed a reported domestic violence suspect overnight in north Phoenix after they say the man lunged at them with a knife.

Phoenix police said they were called to a domestic violence case late Sunday night in the 500 block of West Tonopah Drive.

Police said Alfred San Antonio, 51, had been drinking and threatened the 54-year-old woman with a knife.

The victim said she fought with the suspect in an attempt to disarm him and get away. During the struggle, the suspect injured her.

She escaped and called police. As she ran outside, she observed the suspect stab himself with the knife he held, said Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos.

Despite commands from the officers to drop the knife, San Antonio charged at the officers, Martos said. Fearing for their safety, one of the officers on scene fired from his service weapon.

San Antonio was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer is a six-year veteran with the force. The officer is on administrative leave during the investigation, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
