LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Woodland Heights Medical Center is on the verge of opening the first neonatal intensive care unit in Deep east Texas.
The hospital is almost done with the new wing. All they are lacking is minor medical equipment to be moved in and furniture in the office space.
The new wing will be a big plus for the community.
"We will be the only NICU in the area from Houston to Tyler to Shreveport to Longview, so patients that were previously transferred to one of those areas will be able to stay here," said Casey Robertson, the CEO of Woodland Heights. "We will be able to accept transfers from the higher level NICUs back to this hospital and so what that does is it really helps the patients' family be with their child."
Before the hospital opens, the unit in December they will have a public open house on Nov. 21.
