East Texans celebrate first annual "Blessing of the Bikes"

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

East Texas bikers got together Sunday for their first annual "Blessing of the Bikes."

Dozens of Tyler motorcycle groups participated in the event, which focused on fellowship and education among the groups.

The groups said their goal is to not only foster community, but to make their hobby safer too.

"We enjoy riding bikes," said Biker Blessing Committee organizer Ken Mass. "We pray for more bikers to be safe. We don't want to have too many tragedies for 2014."

Just one of the groups in attendance was the Cross Spoke Riders.

"We're here today to worship together as all bike groups across Tyler and to bless these bikes," said member of the group Jane Harrelson.

The group joined hands, circling around their motorcycles, and prayed for safety.

"We're praying for less accidents," Mass said. "We're going to come together as friends and family."

"It's just something we do as Cross Spoke Riders," Harrelson said. "Let people know that God will protect them when they ride, keep those animals out of the way, keep other drivers alert so that they see the motorcycles. As we all know it's a dangerous sport that we're a part of."

It was also an opportunity for the groups to gather and show off their wide variety of rides, ranging from the sparkling new to the insanely customized. But the event also focused on education.

"We're going to just talk about a lot of new laws that everybody needs to know," Mass said. "Keep everybody aware and keep them in our prayers."

And finally, a chance to remember those that they have lost.

"We're also going to honor our veterans, fallen bikers that we have lost over the last few years," Harrelson said. "It's just some common ground for the bikers to come and be a part of the same thing."

The group said their hope is that both drivers and motorcyclists remember to do their part in watching out for each other and sharing the road safely.
