Harmony Hill Baptist Church celebrates a century of growth and service

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - An East Texas church celebrated a century of worship and service to the Lufkin community this morning.

Leadership at Harmony Hill Baptist Church say they've use technology, music, mission work and God's blessing to grow their church and spread the word.

It all began by holding church under a brush arbor in 1913 now 100 years later Harmony Hill Baptist Church has grown exponentially.

"It's been awesome to see the change and we've added several buildings and we've seen the congregation grow from about 130 members to over 1500 members," said Kathryn Green, senior pastor, John Greene's wife.

"The church sat on top of this hill here for years and years and it has grown into this worship center here," said Senior worship pastor, Stacy Perkins.

But the growth is more than just numbers and buildings...

"I think you get big by getting small and that means by breaking down into smaller groups where everyone feels loved and they feel welcomed," said Perkins.

"It's just been that time and time again god has show his favor on our people and we are celebrating what he has done all the families that have come throughout the years and made Harmony Hill what it is," said John Greene, senior pastor.

And in a time where many churches are closing their doors, leaders say they are blessed to be a blessing and to have served the community for the past century.

"I think it has to be a god thing because if God's not in it, it's not going to happen and it will just fall apart and so I feel like God has really gifted the leadership to guide us through these years," said Kathryn Greene.

Cindy Pierce has called Harmony Hill her church home for 14 years and says, "It's people like that -that have gone before us to get to today and then it's our pastor who has been here for 40 years that's just not normal so you know it's God and you walk into the service and you feel the presence of the Lord."

The centennial celebration was held at the Lufkin Civic Center to accommodate the congregation. There was traditional and contemporary musical performances plus the message for the day and a lunch!
