Greenhouse Ministries is expanding quickly but needs food bank help

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

A food delivery couldn't have come at a better time for the Greenhouse Ministries food bank. Going into Tuesday, there was only enough on the shelf to feed one family.

But thanks to the community answering the call, a truckload came in from World Outreach Church.

Still, the approaching holidays and cuts in the food stamp program mean this helpful food delivery won't last long.

"With two holidays and with the food stamps being cut, it's going to be taking a little bit more," said Greenhouse Ministries co-founder Jane Sharpe.

Greenhouse Ministries has been planting hope in Murfreesboro for about 15 years. For the past three years, it's been located at 309 South Spring, but now the operation is bursting at the seams.

"We're completely out of space," said Greenhouse Ministries co-founder Cliff Sharpe.

The non-profit recently won the bid for a one-acre lot across the street in hopes of building a new building.

For now, its GED, budgeting, parenting, tutoring and reading classes meet at the nearby First Baptist Church.

"We have so many services here to bless people, but we're running out of space," Jane Sharpe said.

The Sharpes say the needs they saw 15 years ago are the same needs they see today. They hope by expanding, they'll be able to serve and feed even more people.

"We saw people didn't have dreams, goals and plans," Cliff Sharpe said.

Friends of Greenhouse will be hosting a fundraiser for the non-profit called Denim and Diamonds to help pay for a new building. It is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at the Readyville Mill.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
