HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -

A 16-year-old accused of killing his mother and younger brother at their home in Henderson entered a not guilty plea in court Monday.

Adrian Navarro-Canales appeared in Clark County District Court on Monday for an arraignment on two counts of murder, showing no emotion during the proceedings.

Police identified the teen as the suspect in the September slayings of his mother, Elvira Canales-Gomez, 40, and his brother, Cesar Navarro, 9.

Police initially called Navarro-Canales a missing person after officers found the victims stabbed to death at an apartment near Eastern Avenue and Sunridge Heights Parkway on Sept. 20. Police later said he was a person of interest in the double slayings before he was detained at a food court on the Las Vegas Strip.

Authorities placed the family members' deaths on Sept. 17, a day after Navarro-Canales' birthday, according to documents.

Speaking on the case, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson noted the teen, who is being charged as an adult, could face as little as 10 years in prison for a second-degree murder conviction. The boy, though, could face a maximum sentence of life in prison without a parole if he was found guilty in trial for first-degree murder.

Because Navarro-Canales is not yet 18, he would not be eligible for the death penalty.

FOX5 legal analyst Bob Massi said the teen's plea gives his defense time to build its case and obtain a mental evaluation.

"What complicates it is, how could a 16-year-old boy have that much inside of him to allegedly commit these crimes?" Massi said.

A Dec. 3 hearing was set for attorneys to discuss a trial date.

Stay tuned to FOX5 for the latest on this developing story.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
