Nacogdoches shop owners looking forward to Small Business Saturday

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

Following "Black Friday" shopping specials, which many stores actually begin on Thursday night, is "Small Business Saturday."American Express latched onto the national campaign about three years ago.

Pioneers are promoting small business shopping is downtown Nacogdoches. East Texas News found out why merchants are eager to support the campaign to "shop small."

Small business owner Amber Miller opened up Miller's Point, a men's clothing store.

She's new on the block.

"This is my first venture as an entrepreneur into retail sales," Miller said.

However, she is swept away by the idea of promoting shop small on Small Business Saturday.

"Small businesses, especially in smaller communities like Nacogdoches are really, they're the backbone of the town," Miller said.

Down the street and around the corner is Polka Dotz, a children's clothing store. About a year and half ago, the previous owner put the children's boutique up for sale.  Manager Stephanie Gilchriest went to her mom.

"A week later we owned the store," Gilchriest said.

Gilchriest is looking forward to her second Small Business Saturday.

"I do, I do," Gilchriest said. "We participated in it last year and we had a pretty good day, so we're looking forward to it this year."

A few items will be put on sale, and an American Express gift card will be given away.

"We passed out over 50 $25 American Express gift cards to various merchants downtown and throughout the city so they can distribute to their customers," said SarahO'Brien, Nacogdoches' Main Street director.

A survey by the National Federation of Independent Business and American Express shows  estimated consumer spending at independent stores and restaurants on Small Business Saturday is $5.5 billion.

The goal is that one day dedicated to supporting small businesses and their neighborhoods will lead to a consumer habit that lasts all year long.

Nacogdoches' Main Street program continues to promote Small Business Saturday.

An American Express gift card will be given away today and tomorrow on the Nacogdoches

 Main Street Facebook page.

And on Saturday the Nine Flag's Wassail Fest at participating downtown stores will  take place from 11 a.m. 4 p.m.
