Angelina College students helping veterans in need

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A group of Angelina College students is giving back to East Texas veterans by raising funds and collecting donations in time for the holidays.

The interpersonal communications class learned that many veterans that come to the Charles Wilson VA Outpatient Clinic are in need. The students have taken over the storage closet at the clinic and have been filling it with socks, T-shirts, men and women undergarments, blankets, soaps, toothpaste, toothbrushes and any other hygiene products veterans may need.

"It feels very rewarding because it's a win for everyone and especially for the veterans getting something that they need ultimately," Elsi Hernandez said.

The students are seeking help from the community for help to continue stocking the storage closet.

"We can use anything right now to help these veterans that have fought for our country," Tiffany Smith said. "Though we won't personally get to meet the veterans that receive the donations we're hoping they will feel love from their community."

On Friday, December 6, 2013, the students will be hosting a "Sock a Vet" event at the Baptist Student Union on the AC Campus from 11:00am-1:00pm.  The first 100 people to bring a donation will receive a free BBQ sandwich plate.
