NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Nacogdoches County Sheriff's deputies arrested a 38-year-old Chireno man Tuesday after he allegedly shoved and slapped a woman before pointing a handgun at her back in July.

Mauricio Rodriguez Rojas is still being held in the Angelina County Jail on a second-degree felony charge of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. No bail has been set at this time.

According to the arrest affidavit, the alleged assault occurred on July 14. Rojas reportedly slapped a woman before he pushed her up against a wall and pointed a black handgun at her.

The allegations about the assault didn't come up until Monday. NCSO investigators interviewed the woman about an ongoing sexual assault of a child, according to the affidavit.

During the interview, the woman told authorities that Rojas is a very violent person and explained that on July 4, he got mad at her because she had to leave the residence to pick up her mother.

At that point, Rojas allegedly started slapping the woman. The affidavit stated he pushed her up against the wall, pointed a gun at her head, and threatened to kill her.

The woman told the investigators that she didn't report the assault to the sheriff's office because she was afraid that Rojas would get out of jail, come to her residence, and hurt her or one of her children.

When an NCSO investigator interviewed Rojas about the sexual assault, he asked the man why he pointed a gun at the woman.

"[Rojas] stated that he did it because he was stupid," the affidavit stated.
