Lufkin Toys for Tots struggling for donations

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The annual Marine Corp League of Lufkin's Toys for Tots campaign is underway in Angelina County and they are hurting for toys this year.

Brian Krews, the coordinator for this year's event, says he is struggling to fulfill the needs of the community in both Angelina and Trinity Counties.

He says he doesn't understand why there has been a decrease this year, but is hoping to get more donations by the time Christmas rolls around.

"I don't know if it's due to the down turn in the economy or what it is. We've had about a 40 percent increase in requests and we've had about a 20 percent decline in numbers of toys that have been donated," Krews said.

Donation boxes are set up at 70 different locations in the county including all the major car dealers, Brookshire Brothers stores, Dollar General stores, and Woodland Heights Hospital.

On Saturday, December 13 a two-day event for Toys for Tots will begin in the Lufkin Walmart parking lot. The organization will host a benefit concert that will occur all day long. Around 8 p.m. the headlining act, Taylor Heard, will perform. Heard is a award-winning singer/songwriter from East Texas. The Lufkin High School choir will also perform.

There is also going to be a Waffle Bake on Wednesday and Thursday at the Angelina College where toys can be dropped off. It starts at 5:30 p.m. on both days and ends at 7:30 p.m.
