To say it will be a busy day Saturday in the city of Tempe would be an understatement.

No fewer than seven major events will bring shoppers, sports fans and musical patrons into the Mill Avenue District and the home of Arizona State University, and the city is doing its best to inform those people of traffic and parking options.

Crowds are expected to be large and continuous, and will heavily impact the city's traffic and resources directly dedicated to the following events:

  • ASU Arts Festival on Mill Avenue, from 9 a.m.- 6 p.m.
  • NCAA Women's Basketball: ASU Classic: Long Beach State vs. Harvard 9 a.m.; ASU vs. Sacred Heart 11:30 a.m.
  • Holiday Swim Festival at Arizona State University, Mona Plummer Aquatics Center 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • ASU Gammage: Musical Evita, two showings, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
  • Moonshine Event (Mill/4th) from 6 p.m. to about 2 a.m. in Square
  • Eagle Rider hosting a concert at McClintock/Curry, 1 p.m.-5 p.m.
  • ASU PAC 12 Football Championship Game 5:45 p.m.

Tempe police Sgt. Michael Pooley said the city is encouraging anyone arriving for the Arts Festival, specifically after noon Saturday, to arrive from the west side of the city, using Priest Drive to University Drive or Priest to RioSalado Parkway.

Pooley said there are several parking structures along Ash Avenue, in addition to a parking structure at Mill Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway that are available and in close proximity to Mill Avenue.

People should expect traffic delays when entering the downtown using Mill Avenue from the north or south, Pooley said.

Fans attending the ASU-Stanford Pac 12 football championship game who are pass holders should approach from the east using Scottsdale/Rural Road, Rio Salado Parkway from McClintock Drive, and University.

Access can also be made from the west by made using Priest to Rio Salado Parkway, Pooley said.

Public parking can be found at the Hayden Ferry Structure at Mill Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway and at a handful of ASU Lots to include a large cash lot at Athletes Way and University Drive, Pooley said.

Also, traffic exiting a Musical at ASU Gammage will be directed southbound on Mill Avenue or eastbound on Apache Boulevard.

Pooley also encourages people to utilize the Park N Rides and to take light rail, arrive early and enjoy the day.
