Phoenix police shoot man wielding axe, knives

Posted: Updated:

The Phoenix Police Department said they shot and critically injured an adult male who was wielding an axe, knife and third weapon at an apartment complex near 27th Avenue and Elm Street around 8 p.m. on Friday.

Phoenix Police spokesperson Sergeant Tommy Thompson said their officers were already at an apartment complex at 4600 N. 27th Avenue when a potential victim approached them, saying a man was swinging an axe.

The suspect left the scene, then returned a short time later. Police tried to confront the suspect, but he allegedly had an axe, knife and a third weapon - possibly another knife - in his possession.

Thompson said the suspect threw a knife at their officers, and that's when one of the officers opened fire.

The suspect was shot and transported to a local hospital in critical condition. It is unclear where the suspect was shot, or how many times.

No officers or bystanders in the area were injured in this incident.

It is not known whether the suspect and victim knew each other.

Thompson said their detectives would be at the scene until early Saturday.
