TxDOT working to keep ice off East Texas bridges and overpasses

VAN ZANDT COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

The Texas Department of Transportation or TxDOT is still monitoring East Texas roads.

Several trucks spent the day in Van Zandt County fighting sleet and freezing rain.

Along I20 near Canton, you'll find many cars covered in ice.

TxdDOT has been in Van Zandt County since Thursday, working 12 hours shifts to fight off ice on bridges and over passes.

"We thought we were going to get a break when it dried up and quit raining on us. We did get a couple of hours, but since then we've had just enough to warrant us to stay here and keep working on the roads," said Larry Krantz, Public Information Officer for Texas Department of Transportation.

Now sand covers the overpasses of East Texas.

TxDOT says East Texas has been fortunate compared to the North Central parts of Texas, but with freezing temperatures, roads can still be dangerous.

"We've been pretty lucky here in East Texas, but that doesn't mean we are out of the woods. We are going to keep working on it," said Krantz.

Professional truck driver James Gumonds says he's seen the worst of it.

"Down through Ft. Worth , Northwest, if you're heading that way, just absolutely forget about it," said Gumonds.

His truck has seen better days, after making a trip from Abilene that took him over 26 hours to make- a travel that typically takes him just 7 hours.

"Here it's a super highway. There it's an ice rink. Trucks are going 5-10 miles an hour and sliding off the road," said Gumonds.

TxDOT says they are doing all they can to avoid roads being turned into ice rinks.

"It's our job to make sure we go out there and deal with it as effectively as we can," said Krantz.

TxDOT is sending several equipment crews from all over East Texas to the harder hit cities in the DFW area.
