PEORIA, AZ (CBS5) -

Neighbors in Peoria honored a man who served during WWII by throwing him a parade Saturday.

Gerardo Sanchez, 89, rode through the neighborhood with the top down as friends and neighbors waved the American flag.

The army veteran wanted to be in last month's Veterans Day parade but he was in the hospital.

So his grandson stepped in and organized the event, which was a complete success.

"All the people were outside waving," Sanchez said. "It drove me crazy."

Sanchez said the parade was a big surprise for him. He thought he was going to a birthday party.
