Pedestrian struck by train in Lafayette

At about 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Lafayette Police responded to the North Loop railroad crossing in reference to a pedestrian being struck by a train.

The pedestrian was 59-year-old Mckensey J. Portalis of Lafayette. According to investigators, he was trying to cross the railroad tracks northward when he was struck by an Amtrack train traveling west.

The pedestrian was thrown 50 feet by the impact. According to authorities, witnesses of the incident say that all warning devices at the crossing were functioning properly when the incident occurred.

The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

No injuries were reported by passengers on the train.

The investigation remains ongoing.
