Meals on Wheels spreads Christmas cheer to pet owners

Posted: Updated:
TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

It wasn't your average day at Meals on Wheels.

On the menu they had baked chicken, whole kernel corn and okra, but to spread the Christmas spirit, Pets Fur People partnered with the ministry to offer Presents for Pets.

"We just feel like it's really special to give our clients the opportunity to feel that they are doing something nice for their pets during the holidays," said Zoe Lawhorn, Vice President of Development and Public Relations for Meals on Wheels Ministry.

Pet owners who are receiving these presents don't have to worry because these bags are personalized with gifts for cats and dogs.

"They have little toys, treats, dog food and cat food," said Lawhorn.

These pets include Max, who was the first out the door and although he can't talk, his owners say they can talk for him.

"He said, 'Hurry up and open it so I can eat,'" said Geneva Swanson, Max's owner.

While Max took the time to check out the new gifts, his owners thanked the ministry for the both of them.

"He really enjoys the people that come here like I do," said Geneva. "They are really nice and friendly."

"It lifts their spirits to know that someone out there cares enough to contribute to something like this," said Jackie Swanson, Geneva's daughter.

Both organizations say they would love to expand their service so more pets can receive food, and a little extra holiday cheer.

"We are in six counties and right now it's limited to Tyler, but that's really because that's where the donations have come from," said Lawhorn.

Pets Fur People and Meals on Wheels delivered presents today to 50 pet owners.
