MARSHALL, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas man was taken to the hospital over the weekend after being shot at a bar in Marshall.

Marshall police say Trey Austin Rogers, 20, was shot outside Charlie's Back Yard Bar on N. Columbus Street in Marshall early Sunday morning.

Police officers, along with ambulance and fire crews, were dispatched to the scene just before 2 a.m. on Sunday. When they arrived, they found Rogers suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

According to a search warrant obtained from authorities, Matthew Hasler, an off-duty Harrison County Sheriff's Deputy, shot Rogers. Hasler, 32, was taken to the Marshall Police Department for further investigation.

Rogers was transported to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Marshall where he was treated. He was then transferred to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, where he is in critical condition.
“The alleged shooter in this instance, a deputy of the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, he had in fact given his letter of resignation the Friday previous to this instance occurring,” Sheriff McCool said.

The Sheriff said Hasler started with the county as a jailer.

“Deputy Hasler had been employed by the sheriff’s office for approximately twelve years, had done some outstanding law enforcement work and we regret that he has been involved,” Sheriff Tom McCool stated.

According to the Harrison County Sheriff's Department, Hasler began his career in 2002 as a jailer. He resigned in May 2004, was rehired as a deputy sheriff in Oct. 2004, before resigning again in Jun. 2007. He was re-hired as a deputy sheriff in Jul. 2007.

“In an instance of this magnitude, in a small community where everybody virtually knows everybody, the parties involved in this particular instance are acquainted, their families are acquainted, so it makes for an especially difficult situation,” McCool said.

An investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the Marshall Police Department along with the Texas Rangers and special investigators from the Harrison County district attorney's office.
