PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A 28-year-old man is dead after he was ejected from his car early Wednesday morning in Phoenix.

Police said the driver has been identified as Benjamin Caleb Smith.

Smith was driving a sedan east on Tierra Buena Lane, just north of Greenway Road, at 47th Avenue when he lost control, hit a cemented mailbox and tree stump and the car rolled, said Phoenix police Officer James Holmes.

The driver was ejected and his body came to rest in the street.

Holmes said some residents in the area said they heard a loud noise between 2 and 3 a.m., but no one went outside to see what it was, Holmes said.

Police were not called to the scene until about 5 a.m. and the driver was pronounced dead, Holmes said.

Investigators are trying to determine exactly why the driver lost control.
