Rusk woman living in a Barbie’s world

Posted: Updated:

Barbie has a new best friend and her name is Cristin Reece.

"I've collected Barbie dolls nearly my whole life. I remember getting a Barbie every year since I can remember," said Reece.

The 36-year-old says this year's window display theme was Christmas in 1942, so with her dad's help she came up with the USO show theme.

"And I learned more about the 1940's doing this than in any history class ever that I went to. But the hardest part was the clothing because everything that Barbie owns is too short and too pastel to be in the 40's you know," said Reece.

Reece says she used most of the clothing and props that she already had.

"For instance this yellow dress is actually from a 1980 African American Barbie. That was the first year Barbie herself was an African American," said Reece.

Reece will splurge and buy outfits on eBay.

"The sailor man his suit is actually from the 60's! I was opening it to put it on the sailor man and my husband said 'we just opened a toy from the 1960s!' so that was kind of cool," said Reece.

Reece uses other dolls based on famous people like Donald Trump, Rosie O'Donnell and Bob Hope to complete her show.

"The ironic part is I paid more for him than any ever one doll I bought and he's not even a Barbie doll," said Reece.

Chapman's pharmacy has been giving Reece control of their window display for the past five years.

And she says every one of her Barbies has a back story. And Reece says the display really is not about the contest but more so a way for her to showcase her passion.

The display will be up until the first week of January.

You can see at Chapman's Pharmacy in the downtown square in Rusk.
