An East Texas man could make his initial appearance in a Mississippi courtroom Thursday, after being charged in a multi-state theft ring.

At least four people have been arrested, accused of stealing nearly $40,000 of construction equipment.

Mississippi authorities said they are still following leads in the case, after arresting four individuals, including Charles Alexander of Timpson.

The group is accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment, including tractor-trailers, back hoes, ATVs, trucks and tools. Authorities believe the theft occurred just west of Jackson, MI about three weeks ago.

Investigators also believe the group intended to sell the equipment on the black market.

“They'll normally move it to another area of the country, say the Midwest,” said Hinds County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Chris Picou. “They will sell it on the black market and they can get 40 or 50 cents on the dollar for that stuff.”

Authorities said much of the equipment recovered Monday night had already been stripped to pieces.

Once recovered, local officials were able to get in touch with the original owners of the vehicles in Louisiana, reuniting them with their stolen property on Tuesday.

Alexander along with three other suspects remain in Mississippi jails without bond, pending their arraignment. But Picou said more arrests are still a possibility.

“We by no means think they are the only ones involved in this, so we are following leads on this case and its going to be a much bigger case than what we got,” Picou said.

At this time, authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
