Donations send wounded Army soldier to BCS Natl. Championship game

PASADENA, CA (WTVM) -

A die-hard Auburn fan and wounded warrior has been given the chance to attend the big game in Pasadena on Monday, and this was all made possible with help from the Auburn family.

U.S. Army Specialist Josh Wetzel was deployed to Afghanistan in May 2012 when he stepped on an IED causing him to lose both of his legs.

He has been recovering at the Walter Reed Medical Center just outside of Washington D.C. and recently just moved to Opelika with his family.

As an anniversary gift, Wetzel's wife Page surprised him with a trip to California and with a little help from Facebook, the Auburn family and some even some Bama fans, they raised enough money to buy him a ticket to the game.

"It's a dream come true, I was beyond excited when I found out," said Wetzel. "I was in tears, I never expected this in my wildest dreams."

He continued, "It's super humbling that people would come together and do stuff like this for people and I never expected anything like this and it's humbling and amazing that people would take their time and give money to help me go."

Opelika comedian, speaker and veteran Jody Fuller heard Wetzel's story, posted it to his Facebook and more than $850 have been raised to send him to Pasadena.

"I'm a veteran so anything I can do to help out a veteran, particularly a wounded warrior, I'll do what I can," said Fuller. "I got a pretty good following on Facebook of a lot of good people to help anytime. So it was just a blessing to be able to do it and send this young man to Pasadena."

The Bowman family decided to give the ticket to Wetzel for free, leaving the money raised to go toward other expenses. They look forward to sitting with him at the game.

"For someone like Josh, it's not often you get to make someone else's dream come true," said Marlene Bowman. "He had a dream of going to the game and to be able to do that for somebody it feels great. It's all about giving."

Wetzel will also attend Auburn University this year to finish his degree. We hope to catch up with him here in California when he arrives this weekend.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
