LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Lufkin Police officers arrested a 29-year-old man after he led them on a high-speed chase down Keltys Street early Tuesday morning, crashed the stolen pickup he was driving, and fled the scene on foot.
Michael Lee McKelvey, of Lufkin, was arrested and charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest/detention with a previous conviction, for misdemeanor warrants from the Lufkin Municipal Court.
According to the police report, Lufkin Police officers attempted to make a traffic stop on a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado that had been traveling at speeds of up to 96 mph on Keltys Street. The driver, who was later identified as Mckelvey, fled from the officers and wound up crashing the pickup into some bushes in the 2800 block of Minnie Lou Street.
At that point, McKelvey fled on foot. The officers caught him in a horse pen that was approximately 200 yards away from where he crashed the pickup. Further investigation revealed that the pickup had been stolen from the 1400 block of Feagin Drive earlier that evening.
"The owner of the vehicle reported that he did not know McKelvey and that the vehicle had been left unlocked with the key inside," the police report stated.
Tuesday's arrest marks McKelvey's 18th Angelina County arrest since 2001. According to the Angelina County Jail Web site, his past arrests include evading arrest, resisting arrest, assault causing bodily injury to a family member, burglary of a vehicle, evading arrest with a vehicle, public intoxication, and delivery of a controlled substance.
