Hundreds hoping to shed some pounds with the Healthy Nacogdoches 'Lighten Up' program

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

Blueberries are certainly allowed foods for those trying to lose weight.

That is what hundreds will be attempting as they participate in the Healthy Nacogdoches 'Lighten Up' program. New and former participants are already weighing in.

Jennifer Shepherd needs a new work badge. She's now more than 120 pounds lighter.

"I started looking at myself," Shepherd said. "I was over 260 pounds and thinking, ' Am I going to die fat?"

Not likely.

"I started walking, went from to the couch to 5K, and started beginning a running program and now I'm doing sprint triathlons," Shepherd said.

All this came after she learned how to swim. She's definitely an inspiration for others weighing in for the Healthy Nacogdoches Lighten Up campaign.

"Last year we had about 850 people sign up for the program," said coordinator Kinnie Douglas. "And about 25 percent of those came back to weigh in. Last year we had three of the grand prize winners were from Nacogdoches County and that was great representation."

Some are joining the initiative again on this first day of weigh in for 2014.

"I started on the first of January 2013 and I'm still going," one participant said. "I weighed in on the first of this year, and I had lost 95 pounds."

For Shepherd, the change in her life means that she's getting to do fun things with her four sons.

"I've done races with all four of them now," Shepherd said.

The regional weight loss campaign puts East Texans on the path to losing hundreds of pounds for a healthier lifestyle - an important accomplishment in a region where people are dying of obesity.

People can weigh-in until the last day of March. There are several public weigh in sites.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
