Henrico Police: 13-year-old brings gun, ammunition to Wilder MS

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

A 13-year-old Douglas Wilder Middle School student is now in police custody after police say they found ammunition and an unloaded handgun on him.

The campus went on a 30-minute lockdown Monday afternoon. Police say the gun was not used to threaten anyone.

Students say they thought the lockdown at school was a drill.

"It's scary," said Jolonda Brown, whose cousin is a student. "It almost makes you want to keep your kids at home."

Police say the teen was searched and a magazine with bullets was found in his pocket.  Officers tell us an unloaded handgun was found in his book bag. School leaders say a small group of students alerted staff.

"If nobody would have reported it, there's no telling what would have happened," said Tenis Murdock.

"Where's his parents?" said Brown. "They need to be arrested also."

Parents say they're concerned no notice about the lockdown went out after it was lifted.

"They should have called and let parents know they were on lockdown. I shouldn't have heard it from a friend," said Shkyra Herbin.

Schools spokesperson Andy Jenks said the lockdown gave staff and police time to assess everything in a controlled environment. Police say the gun was not used to threaten anyone.

"In this particular example, lockdown means people aren't going into the building and people are not going out of the building, but the school day proceeds normally," he said.

Jenks said only school staff and the resource officer handled this case - very different from last week at Glen Allen High School, when that lockdown lasted two hours and a SWAT team was called in.

Police say what was different at Wilder, they knew where to find this student: he was in the cafeteria. Police have not yet charged the 13-year-old.
