ROSWELL, NM (RNN) – A teacher approached a student gunman and talked him into putting down his weapon during a shooting at Berrendo Middle School in Roswell, NM, Tuesday morning.

The boy, approximately 12 years old, allegedly shot two other students around 8 a.m.

An 11-year-old boy, listed in critical condition, and 13-year-old girl, were transported to a Lubbock, TX, hospital.

"We're saddened for their injuries, we're saddened by the hurt that it has brought to the community of Roswell," said Roswell Mayor Jere Wood.

The 11-year-old is described as having injuries to the side of his face and neck and underwent two surgeries Tuesday. The 13-year-old received injuries to her right shoulder and is recovering after undergoing surgery. Initially listed in serious condition, she has been upgraded to satisfactory condition.

The teacher, identified as John Masterson, approached the alleged shooter and asked him to put his weapon down. The boy complied and was apprehended.

"It's one thing for an armed state police officer to enter a school and do his or her job. It is another thing for a teacher or staff member to intervene in a situation like this," said Chief Pete Kassetas with the New Mexico State Police.

The Roswell Police Department's Facebook page said the school was placed on lockdown.

No motive has been determined and charges have not yet been filed.

A prayer vigil held in honor of the victims Tuesday night drew around 1,500 people, according to New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez.

Roswell has a population of about 50,000.
