The daughter of a man who started a Hartford foundation to help students go to college may have embezzled $600,000, according to the state attorney general.

Muriel Hurley, daughter of Doc Hurley, has been the subject of an investigation since December.

That's when Attorney General George Jepsen said the annual Doc Hurley Basketball Tournament was canceled because the fund had run out of money.

"Muriel Hurley systematically looted the foundation," Jepsen told Eyewitness News. "We have identified $200,000 that she used for personal use things like hair salons, doggie daycare, Victoria's Secret."

Jepsen also said there was no longer a board of directors or any meetings related to the foundation. He said that no one was watching Muriel Hurley.

"It's very unfortunate because it puts a damper on the many things Doc Hurley did for the kids," said Kendrick Moore, a former basketball player for Hartford Public High School who had played in the tournaments. "My junior and senior year we looked forward to the Doc Hurley Tournament. It was more than just a basketball game, it was a community event."

State Rep. Doug McCrory, a Democrat from Hartford, earned a scholarship from the foundation that he said helped him fulfill his dreams of going to college.

"A big let down, but we are going to bounce back," said McCrory, "because a lot of people are interested in bringing back and upholding the name of Doc Hurley."

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has stepped in and said it will create a new fund called the "Doc Hurley Scholarship Fund for Greater Hartford." This will have no connection to the current Doc Hurley Scholarship Foundation.

The Foundation for Public Giving said it's doing that because Doc Hurley has been an inspiration.
