Man sentenced to 3 years after eating marijuana during a traffic stop

RUSK COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A Rusk County jury sentenced a Louisiana man to three years in prison Wednesday for tampering with physical evidence during a traffic stop.

According to the Rusk County District Attorney's Office, 64-year-old Raymond Riley of New Orleans was found guilty of tampering with physical evidence in a case from 2005. Before finally appearing in a Rusk County courtroom, Riley had been a fugitive since he was released on bond in 2005. He failed to appear for a number of trials and was only returned to Rusk County after a routine traffic stop showed he had outstanding warrants.

Riley was stopped by former Rusk County Deputy Morgan Biggs during a routine traffic stop in 2005. Dashcam video shows Riley eating a small bag of what later was found to be marijuana. Eating evidence to prevent a police officer from discovering it is a third degree felony offense of tampering with physical evidence. Later during the traffic stop, Riley can be seen throwing what was later determined to be heroin in an attempt to hide it.
