A 21-year-old San Augustine man turned himself into authorities Wednesday after he learned that a felony arrest warrant had been issued in connection to an incident in which he allegedly sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl in July 2013.
Brandon D. O'Shields, of San Augustine, was booked in to the San Augustine county Jail on a first-degree felony charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child. He was released a short time later after he posted a $5,000 bail.
Chief Deputy Gary Cunningham, a spokesman for the San Augustine County Sheriff's Office said that even though the alleged sexual encounter at O'Shields' residence on Milam Street in San Augustine was not forced, a minor under the age of 17 cannot legally give consent to have sex, according to Texas criminal law.
Cunningham said the 13-year-old girl and her mother have been very cooperative with law enforcement authorities.
The case is under investigation, and Cunningham said additional charges related to more child sex assault victims may be pending.
