Kilgore police auctioning off AR-15 in support of officer's family

KILGORE, TX (KLTV) -

An East Texas police officers association is coming to the aid of of a fellow officer's family.

The brother of a Kilgore police officer was hospitalized with H1N1 last month, and is in critical condition in a Tyler hospital. So, a raffle has been organized to raise money to offset medical expenses, with the prize: an AR-15 rifle.

Will Goodson, 38, the brother of a Kilgore police officer, contracted H1N1 last month and is fighting for his life in a hospital.

"He was going to be in the hospital for some time. The remaining money we collect from the ticket sales will be used to pay medical expenses for Mr. Goodson," says officer Angela Burch of the Kilgore Police Officers Association.

A new Bushmaster AR-15 .223 rifle was donated as the prize.

In light of Washington's stance on gun control, organizers are defending their choice.

"We have the right to bear arms. People love to hunt, they love to shoot. It was just an easy sell. The people that follow the rules are going to be hurt by the rules. The criminals are going to continue to do what they do. The laws are only obeyed by those that follow the law," Burch says.

Some question a gun as an appropriate raffle item.

But others say, "this is Texas."

"If this was a barbecue pit, we wouldn't be doing this now, no one would care," said one raffle supporter.

Organizers say the winner will undergo an extensive background check.

Kilgore police officers association members tell us that even though Will Goodson is still listed in critical condition, his condition is improving.

The raffle for the AR-15 will be held on April 1. Tickets can be purchased from the Kilgore Police Officers Association at the Kilgore Police Department.
