Early morning fire destroys Smith County home

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Smith County fire crews extinguished an early morning house fire in the 15,000 block of FM 14 in Red Springs.

Frances Galindo woke up just before 5 a.m. to smoke in the house and immediately picked up her 2-year-old son who was in bed with her and started hitting walls to wake up her 15 and 16-year-old daughters who go to Winona High School. The entire family made it out safely. However, the family puppy died in the fire.

The two story wood frame home burned to the ground and is a complete loss. There were no smoke detectors in the home, and the family does not have insurance.

The fire was possibly caused by an overloaded circuit breaker from two space heaters that were plugged in due to the cold weather. Investigators will return this afternoon to continue the investigation into the cause. Red Cross has been contacted for help.

The family will stay with other family members who live on the same property.
