ETX Congressman Louie Gohmert co-chairs National Prayer Breakfast

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON D.C. (KLTV) -

For more than 60 years, American Presidents have spent a morning in prayer with members of Congress. That tradition continued with Thursday's National Prayer Breakfast.

The breakfast is co-chaired by a member of Congress from each party. This year, the Republican chair was East Texas' own Louie Gohmert. He told KLTV 7 that the event is so important, it should happen a lot more than once a year.

Congressman Gohmert stood between President Obama, and Vice President Joe Biden Thursday morning at the breakfast.

"It's a time when we can actually put aside politics, party affiliation, all of those things," Gohmert said. "And just concentrate on something that all those present can agree on: the power of prayer, and the need for God's blessing."

Gohmert actually chairs the prayer breakfast every week, on a smaller scale. He joked with KLTV that the only reason he got that job was because House Speaker John Boehner doesn't pick the chair.

Gohmert says opposition is not what this breakfast is about. He told President Obama that when he first arrived to the breakfast.

"I assured the president that today would not be about politics, it would be about the love of God," Gohmert said.

He echoed that sentiment in his opening remarks to the crowd.

"There's a time when we can argue and debate the important issues and our disagreement on how to go about achieving the best for America," Gohmert said. "And this isn't it."

Gohmert told KLTV 7 that if it were up to him, a prayer breakfast like this would happen four times a year, not just once.

"The guards go down, people are honest, and I think it would help the country if we did have it more often."

Gohmert also said that you can tell a difference in the way people in Congress deal with each other after the breakfast, because it's easier to work with people after you've prayed with them.
