Paralyzed man plans hunting trip with donated wheelchair

Posted: Updated:
TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

A Tyler man, who is paralyzed from the waist down, says his prayers are finally being answered.

We first ran a story on Garrett Wiley in October. He was hurt in a car accident back in 2008. He has not been able to do the things he loves in his regular wheelchair so he started to raise money to buy an electric one last year. After our story about Wiley's mission aired, an East Texas couple reached out and decided to grant his wish for free. Today, the wheelchair Wiley has been dreaming of was finally given to him.

"That's sweet. I like that," Wiley said.

Today was the first time he saw his new wheel chair up close and personal.

"The pictures definitely do not do justice," Wiley said.

Gale Steele says there was one reason why she wanted to help Garrett.

"I had heard it on the news that night and knew that he needed it," Steele said. "My sons love to hunt and fish, and I wanted him to get back doing it again. That's why I done what I did."

The once football star is now paralyzed from the waist down but he hasn't given up on his favorite hobby.

"I hope he goes and kills a big deer with it," Steele said.

He plans to do a lot outdoors once he gets some practice in the electric wheelchair.

"I'm going to definitely use it to go hunting. That'll make everything a lot easier than trying to wheel around in a manual wheelchair," Wiley said.

He says he did a little research online when he heard the Steele's had ordered the $9,000 wheelchair. Now, he's excited he can hunt, carry his gun and even a deer all on his new machine that's decked out in camo.

"It's just a good feeling to know he's going to get out there and hunt and stuff again," Steele said.

Garrett says he will soon forget how difficult it has been for the last few years to attempt his favorite hobbies.

"It's unbelievable. Even when I first came in contact with them and they were like we'd like to get this for you, I was shocked because you know it's rare to see people show so much kindness especially for a stranger," Wiley said.

Wiley says he is already planning a hunting trip in Kemp once he gets the hang of his new machine.
