Volunteers help Lufkin residents with taxes

Posted: Updated:

Filing your taxes can be scary for anyone who does not understand the complex tax code, but this year you're not alone and volunteers will help.

Tuesday was the first day of the annual AARP tax aide program and they were busy all morning.

The volunteers used their skills to walk people through the tax process and file their paperwork at no cost to the customer.

"It's a real benefit for people," Jim Haley said. "If they are required to go pay a tax preparer to go do it then it could cost them two or three hundred dollars and we do this for free for individuals who come in."

The free service runs every Tuesday and Thursday through April 10 at Lufkin's Kurth Memorial Library.

People must sign in and are helped on a first come, first serve basis.

Volunteers also ask for people to bring any tax information they have.
