MI leaders collaborate efforts to stop drug abuse

MONROE COUNTY, MI (Toledo News Now) -

Crime Stoppers and three unions in southeastern Michigan held a press conference Wednesday afternoon to announce a partnership to help the fight against prescription drug abuse and the heroin epidemic.

The United Auto Workers, Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters, and Laborers' Local 499 have donated a total of $10,000 to assist Crime Stoppers and local law enforcement in a new prevention effort to attack this problem.

Prescription drug abuse and heroin use has the particular quality of changing the face of entire neighborhoods and cities. Crime has increased in areas where drug abuse has risen and an increase in overdose deaths are also attributed to this problem. Thankfully, a united response from the union leaders and their membership can make a powerful change. Local leaders, as well as the community, welcome this initiative.

"For over 20 years now, we have worked vigorously to make a difference in all seven counties that we serve," said John Broad, president of Crime Stoppers of Michigan. "I am excited that these unions have partnered with Crime Stoppers to assist in the prevention effort, and people in the community are starting to understand what we do and how we do it, and are working together to build safer communities. Monroe County Prosecutor William Paul Nichols indicated that this initiative was one of many steps that arose from the first ever prescription drug abuse and heroin summit held at the Monroe County Community College on Dec. 3, 2013."

How can you help? Crime Stoppers of Michigan offers a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest regarding prescription drug abuse or heroin. Anyone who has information regarding the crime should call Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. All calls and cash rewards are completely anonymous.
