Fees waved at National Forests for President's Day weekend

LUFKIN, TX (News Release) -

The National Forests and Grasslands in Texas is waiving fees at day-use recreation sites Feb. 15-17 for Presidents' Day weekend.

"Our public lands are open to everyone, and we hope these free days offer an incentive to all people to visit any of the 193 million acres of land held in trust for their enjoyment and use," U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell said.

No fees are charged at any time on 98 percent of national forests and grasslands. Approximately two-thirds of developed recreation sites in national forests and grasslands can be used for free.

Camping fees remain in effect, but day-use fees will be waived on Feb. 15-17 at these recreation areas and trails:

Angelina National Forest -- Caney Creek and Townsend

Sabine National Forest -- Ragtown, East Hamilton, Haley's Ferry, Indian Mounds, Lakeview and Willow Oak

Davy Crockett National Forest -- Ratcliff Lake and Piney Creek Horse Trail

Sam Houston National Forest – Cagle Boat Ramp, Scotts Ridge Boat Ramp, Double Lake, Stubblefield and Sam Houston Multiple Use Trail

Caddo National Grassland – Coffeemill and Bois d Arc Trail.

LBJ National Grassland -- Black Creek Lake, Valley View and TADRA.

Other scheduled fee-free days observed by the Forest Service are June 14, National Get Outdoors Day; Sept. 27, National Public Lands Day; and Nov. 8-11, Veteran's Day weekend.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
