LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - After a unified vote by council members, Lufkin will soon have its first distillery.
At Tuesday night's city council meeting, members unanimously approved plans to allow business owner Bruce Love to open "Love Distillery" in the downtown area.
The distillery would only be allowed to make a certain amount of liquor each year and would not be allowed to sell their product on site.
Love said that it is still unclear what type of liquor that they will be making but it will be a neat opportunity for people visiting downtown.
"It's a manufacturing process and a lot of people don't know how the manufacturing process works through the distillation process, so it is actually kind of neat and we will walk people through that," Love said.
On Feb.13, Love pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors of possession of illicit beverage/equipment to manufacture, after TABC and deputies with the sheriff's office confiscated his distillery equipment in March 2013. Love maintained at the time that he was in the process of obtaining a permit for the business, but took TABC advice in purchasing the equipment first to have it inspected so that he could operate the distillery.
In a previous version of this story, KTRE incorrectly reported the charges and allegations.
