NEW HOPE, AL (WAFF) -

The Georgia escapee who led Madison County law enforcement on a chase early Wednesday morning is believed to have fled the area.

Chad Dasher, an escaped inmate from Tattnall County, Georgia, led deputies on a chase after they attempted to pull him over in New Hope.

Deputies attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle Dasher was driving when he reportedly sped away and crashed. Deputies said Dasher then ran from the stolen vehicle. According to authorities, Dasher fled from units on foot in the area of Main Drive and Oak Grove Road.

The SUV Dasher left behind was recovered by deputies. Authorities found several items in the car, including a generator, chainsaw, clothes and mattress pad. Dasher may have been living inside the car since his escape in January.

Wednesday afternoon, Madison County investigators said it appeared Dasher fled from the area and they feel he is traveling to Georgia in another SUV, a black 2002 Toyota Sequoia with tag 47C45W5. They said he stole the vehicle during the manhunt Wednesday morning.

Madison County Superintendent Dr. David Copeland said that New Hope schools were on a "partial lockdown" during the day, but business was conducted as usual, aside from the locking of the front doors and the monitoring of those coming in and out of the schools. School officials kept a close eye on the situation and said the campuses will remain on partial lockdown status until they are given an all-clear.

Later in the afternoon, authorities in Jackson County searched the area of Highway 72 and County Road 63 after receiving a tip from someone who thought they spotted Dasher, but uncovered no leads.

The US Marshals Service in Birmingham confirmed Wednesday they are involved in the search for Dasher, but would not go into what that involvement entails.

Authorities consider Dasher armed and extremely dangerous. If you see anyone on foot and possibly muddy, do not approach the subject. Please call 9-1-1 immediately.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
